Taken at The Weirs, the lakeside village where Lake Winnipesaukee narrows toward the Winnipesaukee River in central New Hampshire, this view shows a shoreline that drew summer visitors for decades. The name refers to fish weirs, traps of stakes and nets set across the narrows, a practice that predates the area's growth as a resort. By the early 1900s, rail lines and steamboats had brought vacationers to the lake, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one to railroads and travel promoters. The large 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail in the water and along the shore.
