Squam Lake, in the Lakes Region of central New Hampshire, is the focus of this view taken from Shepard Hill, a high vantage that lets the eye sweep across the water and its wooded shoreline. The picture is one of the glass-plate negatives made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1890 and 1910 produced a vast catalog of American scenery, towns, and tourist destinations for sale as photochrome prints and postcards. Such views were aimed at a growing class of summer travelers drawn by the cooler air and clear water of the northern lakes. The 8-by-10-inch glass negative preserves the sharp detail and tonal range that made the company's large-format work prized.
