The wall pictured here is the execution wall at the Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabaña, the Spanish fortress on the bay at Havana. Spanish engineers began building the fort in the 1660s, and the main construction was completed in the 1770s after the British briefly held the city. During the Spanish colonial era, the wall was used for firing-squad executions, including those of many Cuban independence activists. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass-plate negative around 1904, when Cuba had recently become a republic but the fortress still bore its colonial-era marks.
