A heap of human bones lies in the open at the Necropolis Cristobal Colon in Havana, one of the largest cemeteries in the Americas, which opened in 1871. Havana's cemeteries reused burial space, so remains were commonly removed from older graves and gathered into ossuaries once a tomb's lease ran out. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views, made this glass negative sometime between 1895 and 1910, when Cuba moved from Spanish rule to American influence. The blunt subject makes it an unusual record of the cemetery's everyday practices.
