The mound stands inside Vicksburg National Cemetery, where rows of Union headstones surround an earthen rise built centuries before the cemetery existed. Native peoples raised such mounds in the Mississippi Valley long before European settlement, and this one was left standing when the grounds were laid out for the soldiers who died during the 1863 siege of Vicksburg. This c1906 glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American landmarks to travelers and publishers, so the photograph shows how the site was presented to the public in the early twentieth century.
