Vicksburg National Cemetery, on the bluffs above the Mississippi River, holds the Union dead from the 1863 siege of Vicksburg, and this view shows its officers' circle, the section set aside for commissioned officers. The cemetery was established after the Civil War, when the federal government gathered scattered battlefield burials into permanent national grounds, and many of the graves there belong to soldiers who could not be identified. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued travel views of American landscapes and monuments around 1906, sold scenes like this to tourists visiting battlefields and memorial sites.
