The image shows a cadet battalion drawn up at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, as it stood for inspection around 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format color and black-and-white views of American landmarks, produced many such scenes of the academy for sale to tourists. West Point, founded in 1802, trained officers under a rigid routine in which formal inspections were a central ritual, and the rows of uniformed cadets at attention reflect that discipline. The glass negative, a standard format of the period, preserves the sharp detail of the uniforms and formation.
