Cadets of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, march past the reviewing stand in this glass-plate negative, one of many views the Detroit Publishing Company made of the post in the early 1900s. Parades like this were a regular part of cadet life at the academy, which had trained army officers since 1802 and held formal reviews that drew visitors from across the country. The company, based in Detroit, sold its photographs widely as postcards and travel views, so the image shows both a military ritual and the popular appetite for pictures of American landmarks. The date is an estimate, given with a question mark in the record.
