Cadets drill across the grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in this glass-plate negative made sometime between 1900 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated as a commercial photographer and publisher of picture postcards and views from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced many scenes of American landmarks like this one for tourists and schools. West Point, founded in 1802 on the Hudson River, was by then the nation's principal school for training Army officers, and its ceremonies were a popular subject for visitors. The large 8 x 10 inch plate preserves fine detail in the uniforms and formation.
