Cadets drilling on the parade ground at West Point, New York, are the subject of this 5-by-7-inch glass negative, made between 1900 and 1915. The United States Military Academy, founded in 1802 on the Hudson River, trained officers through daily drill and formal dress parades, and the catalog suggests this may be one of the ceremonial formations. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American places as prints and postcards in the early twentieth century. Its title was supplied by a cataloger, so the scene is best read as a record of cadet life in that period.
