This view shows the west approach to the Hotel Champlain at Bluff Point, New York, a lakeside resort on the western shore of Lake Champlain. The picture focuses on the road leading up to the hotel, so it records the access route as much as the building. Resort hotels like this drew summer visitors from cities by rail and steamer in the early 1900s, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views of such places to travelers and promoters. The large 8 by 10 inch glass negative gives it sharp detail of the roadway, the grounds, and the surrounding landscape.
