The Grotto at Hotel Champlain is a view of a rustic, cave-like feature on the grounds of a resort on Bluff Point, on the western shore of Lake Champlain in northern New York. The hotel drew summer visitors who came by steamer and rail to enjoy the lake air and the scenery, and its grounds included picturesque spots like this one, built to be photographed and admired. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made many views of American resorts and landscapes in the early 1900s, recorded such places for travelers and promotional use. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative shows the kind of carefully composed tourist scene that defined the era's resort photography.
