The lobby of the Hotel Utica in Utica, New York, is the subject here, a rare indoor view in a collection better known for streets, rivers and mountain scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, sold views like this to hotels, railroads and travel markets, and photographers working for it often used large glass plate negatives, such as this 8 x 10 inch example, to capture fine detail. Dating from between 1905 and 1915, the picture shows the public face a hotel presented to travelers of that era, with its furnishings and open floor plan offering a sense of how such rooms were arranged before the hotel boom of the 1920s changed the form.
