The lobby of the Hotel Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, is the subject here, a view of an interior meant to show a hotel's public face to travelers. Glass negatives of this size, made roughly between 1900 and 1920, were the basis for the Detroit Publishing Company's work, which sold views of American towns, hotels and resorts to railroads and travel promoters. Hotel lobbies of the period were busy social spaces where guests registered, waited, and met, so images like this one record how commercial hospitality was presented to the public. The negative's record notes that it was a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
