The reception lobby of the Hotel Utica in Utica, New York, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made sometime between 1905 and 1915. Hotel lobbies of that era were the social center of a building, where travelers checked in, business was conducted, and guests gathered in the lounge areas. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many views of American cities and institutions for travel promotion, and its negatives document how hotels presented themselves to the public in the early twentieth century. The plate later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a 1949 gift before entering the Library of Congress.
