The Hotel Utica in Utica, New York, is preserved here on two 8 x 10 inch glass plate negatives, made between 1905 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company. The company's photographers traveled widely to record American cities, resorts and landmarks, and its views were sold as prints and postcards. What makes this pair worth a closer look is the second negative, which copies a heavily retouched print with automobiles added to the street. Publishers sometimes altered scenes this way to suggest a modern, busy town as the car spread across the country.
