Hotel Wentworth's pier at New Castle, New Hampshire, shows how summer guests once reached this resort on the Piscataqua River. The hotel stood on the island at the harbor's edge, and in the early 1900s visitors often arrived by water, so a working pier was as much a part of the resort as its lodgings. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1905 and 1915, when the firm was producing large numbers of views of hotels, rail destinations and scenic places for travel promotion. The picture is worth a close look for the way it records a seaside holiday economy that depended on boats and piers.
