Few visitors to the Hotel Wentworth in New Castle, New Hampshire, would have walked into this annex parlor without expecting a view of the sea, yet this room looks inward, toward upholstered seating, tall windows, and the formal furnishings of a turn-of-the-century resort. The hotel sat on a rocky point at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor and became well known in 1905, when delegates to the Russo-Japanese peace conference were lodged there during their talks in nearby Portsmouth. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this glass-plate negative between about 1900 and 1915, sold such views to promote hotels and rail travel, so the picture reflects how resorts presented their comfort to prospective guests.
