A mezzanine view inside the Hotel Utica in Utica, New York, is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from the company's many street and exterior scenes. The Detroit Publishing Company, active in the early twentieth century, documented American cities, resorts, and public buildings for commercial sale, and its interiors like this one show how large hotels were laid out for travelers and local visitors. The picture dates from roughly 1905 to 1915, when hotels in mid-sized industrial cities were central to commerce and civic life. The 8 by 10 inch glass plate was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the Library of Congress in 1949.
