The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, opened in 1893 by Guido Pfister, was among the city's most ornate hotels, and this view of its parlor shows the lavish interior that drew visitors in the early 1900s. The image is a glass dry plate negative, one of thousands made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American towns, hotels and scenery for postcards and travel books. Its catalog number and the dating to roughly 1900 to 1905 place it in the company's peak years of commercial photography, when such interiors were meant to show off a city's finest accommodations.
