The dining room at the Hotel Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, is the subject of this glass negative, a view of a hotel interior from the era when travelers judged a stop by its public rooms. The plate is an 8 by 10 inch dry plate made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country between about 1900 and 1920 to record hotels, resorts, and town scenes, often for promotional use. Images like this one were meant to suggest a comfortable, orderly place to stay, so they reveal as much about how hotels presented themselves as about the rooms themselves. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
