This view shows the Spalding Hotel in Duluth, Minnesota, a port city on the western tip of Lake Superior whose downtown hotels served grain and iron-ore shippers, railroad travelers, and summer tourists. The record tags the scene as a street view as well, so the hotel is likely shown with the avenue that ran past its entrance. Around 1908, the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing American towns and cities on large glass negatives like this one, and its sales of prints and postcards helped spread images of growing places across the country. The large 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in buildings, signage, and the people and vehicles on the street.
