The Fort Pitt Hotel takes its name from the British fort built at the Point, where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio, and the city around it was known for steel, glass and rail traffic. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 and sold views of towns, hotels and landscapes as prints and postcards. Its record notes that the plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. The large format suited the detailed architectural views the company favored.
