The dry moat that rings Fort Monroe, at Old Point Comfort on the tip of the Virginia peninsula, is the feature this view centers on. Its broad, stone-walled ditch surrounds the star-shaped masonry fortress, begun in 1819 to guard the entrance to Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay. The fort never fired in anger against an enemy fleet, but it held Union forces during the Civil War and later housed Jefferson Davis as a prisoner in 1865. This negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country around 1900 recording towns, landmarks and military sites for sale as views.
