Few Civil War-era forts still show their original defenses as clearly as Fort Monroe does here, with its broad moat and sloping earthen ramparts at Old Point Comfort on Virginia's Chesapeake coast. Construction began in 1819 on a large star-shaped masonry fort that stayed under Union control throughout the Civil War, and it held Jefferson Davis as a prisoner after 1865. This glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American landscapes and landmarks in the early twentieth century, roughly between 1905 and 1920.
