The ramparts of Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida, rise from coquina, a soft shell limestone cut from local quarries. The Spanish began the fort, now called the Castillo de San Marcos, in the 1670s, and it guarded the town for more than a century before the United States renamed it Fort Marion in 1825. This Detroit Publishing Company glass negative, made between 1895 and 1910, shows the walls at a time when the old city was drawing growing numbers of visitors.
