The courtyard of the Ponce de Leon Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, is the subject here, a view of the hotel's central garden and fountain as it appeared around 1905. The Ponce de Leon was built by Henry Flagler and opened in 1888, one of the Spanish Renaissance Revival showpieces that made St. Augustine a winter destination for wealthy northern visitors. Photographers for the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American landmarks and resorts, documented places like this to promote travel by rail and steamer to Florida. The glass negative format of this image reflects the large-plate photography of the period, which captured fine detail in the hotel's grounds.
