Most views in the Detroit Publishing Company's Florida series show streets, churches and hotels, so this interior of El Unico, a St. Augustine gift shop, stands apart. The city, founded by Spanish colonists in 1565, drew growing numbers of winter visitors in the late 1800s after Henry Flagler's railroad and hotels opened the region to travelers. Shops like this one sold souvenirs and curios to those tourists, and the 8 x 10 glass negative records how such stores were arranged for browsing. The Detroit firm made many views like this for sale to visitors and to railroad promoters.
