St. George Street in St. Augustine, Florida, is one of the oldest continuously settled thoroughfares in the United States, laid out in the Spanish colonial town founded in 1565. This glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1910, records the street's residences and wooden balconies at a time when Florida's old Spanish quarter was drawing winter visitors eager for a sense of the past. The company's large-format plates, prized for their sharp detail, captured such views for travel promotion, and this one preserves the streetscape's architecture as it looked in the early twentieth century.
