Its subject is St. George Street, the historic heart of St. Augustine, Florida, a city founded by Spanish settlers in 1565 and often called the oldest continuously occupied European-established community in the continental United States. By the early 1900s the town drew winter visitors arriving by Henry Flagler's railroad, who came to see its coquina and stucco buildings and overhanging balconies. The view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers travelled widely recording American towns and scenery.
