A courtyard inside the Hotel Ponce de Leon in St. Augustine, Florida, is the subject here, offering a view of the resort's interior rather than its exterior. Henry Flagler built the hotel in the late 1880s as the centerpiece of his railroad and tourism ventures along Florida's east coast, and its Spanish Renaissance design drew wealthy winter visitors to the Ancient City. The negative is attributed to photographer William Henry Jackson, whose travel views for the Detroit Publishing Company helped popularize images of American resorts and landmarks in the 1890s.
