The Royal Poinciana Hotel stood on the shore of Lake Worth in Palm Beach, and at its peak it was one of the largest wooden resort hotels in the world, built by Henry Flagler in 1894 to draw wealthy winter visitors to Florida's east coast. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country around 1900 to 1920 making views of hotels, rail lines and scenic places that the company then sold as prints and postcards. The plate is cracked and was repaired by taping it to a second sheet of glass, a detail that hints at how fragile these large negatives were after decades of handling.
