The view is across the water to the Royal Poinciana Hotel, photographed from the wharf at Palm Beach, Florida, in 1902. Henry Flagler, the railroad and hotel developer, opened the Royal Poinciana in 1894 as one of the largest wooden hotels in the world, and it drew wealthy winter visitors to the Lake Worth shore. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American towns, resorts and scenery, made this large glass-plate negative, and its records show how resort towns like Palm Beach were presented to travelers at the time.
