The Royal Palm Hotel stood on the Miami River where it meets Biscayne Bay, and this glass negative shows the resort at the height of its popularity as a winter destination. Henry Flagler, who extended his railroad down the Florida coast, opened the hotel in 1897 to draw wealthy northern visitors to a town that was then little more than a settlement. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American scenery and resorts for sale to travelers and publishers, made the picture around 1904. Its large 8 by 10 inch format captures the hotel's grounds and waterfront in fine detail.
