The Banff Springs Hotel sits at the foot of Mount Rundle in the Canadian Rockies, and this glass negative captures the building against that dramatic peak. The Canadian Pacific Railway opened the hotel in 1888 as a luxury resort for travelers crossing the country by rail, and its château-style towers became a symbol of the railway's push to draw tourists into the mountains. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1906, the view belongs to a large body of promotional photographs that helped popularize western landscapes and grand hotels for eastern visitors.
