Three separate 8 by 10 inch glass negatives were joined into one wide view of the Eastman Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and the catalog numbers show they were meant to be read left to right. Hot Springs drew visitors for more than a century before the springs were set aside as a federal reservation in 1832, and hotels like this one served the steady stream of guests who came to take the waters. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of resort towns and tourist sites in the early 1900s, and this set came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
