The Hotel Seneca in Rochester, New York, is the subject here, a downtown hotel photographed in the years between 1905 and 1920. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that made large numbers of city views, hotels, and landscapes across the United States in that period. Rochester was then a fast-growing industrial city, home to firms such as Eastman Kodak, so a picture of its hotel captures the commercial life of the city as well as its architecture. The glass negative, an 8 by 10 inch plate, was later given to the Library of Congress through the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
