Seneca Park's aviary, set beside a lake, shows a feature that made this Rochester park a destination for weekend visitors around 1900. Municipal parks of that era often combined caged birds, ornamental water and walking paths to offer city residents a quiet escape from crowded streets. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, parks and scenic spots and sold the views as travel souvenirs. Its glass negatives capture how leisure spaces were arranged and used in the years before automobiles changed how people moved through parks.
