Highland Park in Rochester, New York, takes its character partly from the municipal reservoir on its grounds, and this view shows a fountain rising from the water there. The park was laid out in the late 1880s under the direction of the landscape firm associated with Frederick Law Olmsted, and its reservoir was built as part of the city's water system, so the fountain sits where practical engineering and ornamental design meet. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, parks and scenery for sale to a national market in the early twentieth century.
