Hyde Park Avenue in Tampa, Florida, is a shaded residential street in one of the city's older neighborhoods, which took shape in the early 1900s as the streetcar system opened land for homes south of the downtown core. Around 1905, when this glass-plate negative was made, Tampa was a growing port city built on cigar manufacturing, shipping, and phosphate, and its new neighborhoods showed a rising middle class. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented towns and scenery across the United States and sold views to the public. Its glass negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
