Few details of this view stand out as much as its subject: a live elk kept in Walbridge Park, a Toledo, Ohio, public park. Captive elk and deer were a common sight in American city parks in the early 1900s, when municipal parks often included animal enclosures for families to visit. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative between about 1900 and 1906, sold such scenes of towns, parks and landscapes as photographic prints and postcards. The negative later reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
