Few images in the Detroit Publishing Company collection capture a park entrance quite like this one, with a gate standing partly open at the head of a stairway lined with flowers. The picture was made around 1905 at Como Park in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photochrom and photographic views of American scenery and towns, sold landscape images to travelers and tourists. Como Park was a popular public green space at the time, and the gate and steps suggest the careful, decorative landscaping that drew visitors there. The record notes this glass negative was a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado and entered the collection in 1949.
