The Foot of Jackson Street in St. Paul, Minnesota, looks down on the Mississippi River landing where steamboats tied up to load and unload freight and passengers. Photographed around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the image shows the working waterfront that once made St. Paul a major river port. The river trade was central to the city's growth in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the wharves and steamboats here reflect how goods and people moved along the upper Mississippi before rail and road transport took over much of that traffic. The scene is worth studying for its record of riverfront commerce in that era.
