Wildwood, an amusement park on the shore of White Bear Lake northeast of St. Paul, Minnesota, is the setting here. In this view from about 1905, children and adults wade and paddle in the shallows while a water slide rises in the background. Lakeside parks like this were often reached by streetcar or boat, and they gave city families a summer escape close to home. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold its photographs to travelers and collectors, recorded many scenes like this across the country in the early 1900s.
