Profile Lake lies in Franconia Notch, where the rock ledge known as the Old Man of the Mountain can be seen in profile from the water, which gave the lake its name. This glass negative shows a plain boathouse on its shore, a building that would have served summer visitors renting boats during the era of resort hotels and tourist travel. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many White Mountain views like this one, which were sold to travelers as souvenirs and postcards. Such views document how the region's lakes were presented to visitors around 1900.
