Prospect House, a summer hotel on the shore of Lake Bomoseen in Castleton, Vermont, is the subject of this view, which the Detroit Publishing Company recorded on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1905. In that period, many lakeside hotels in New England drew vacationers who arrived by rail and stayed for weeks at a time, and the company photographed such resorts to promote travel. The picture shows how a lakeside resort was set against its water and landscape, and it documents a type of leisure that was popular before automobiles widened where people could go.
