A rustic footbridge on the grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House sets this view apart, placing a hotel's woodland landscaping in the Shawangunk Mountains above Lake Mohonk in Ulster County, New York. Albert and Alfred Smiley, Quakers, founded the resort in 1869, and it became known for its wooded walks, carriage roads, and rustic structures that blended into the hillside. Detroit Publishing Company photographers recorded many such resort scenes around 1900, when travelers reached the Hudson Valley by rail to escape city heat. The large 8 x 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail in the timber work and surrounding foliage.
