Rather than Jefferson's own hilltop mansion, this picture turns to the Old Lovin house, a dwelling in the Monticello area near Charlottesville, Virginia, that the catalogers tied to the former president's surroundings. Thomas Jefferson designed and built Monticello over several decades and died there in 1826. By the early twentieth century, the estate drew steady numbers of visitors curious about his life. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photographic views of American places to travelers and mail-order buyers, made this large glass-plate negative around 1905, and it preserves a glimpse of the older homes that stood near the famous landmark.
