The tennis courts at the Kittatinny House in the Delaware Water Gap of northeastern Pennsylvania show a leisure activity that resort hotels were adding to their grounds around the turn of the twentieth century. The Water Gap drew summer guests by rail from New York and Philadelphia, and hotels like the Kittatinny offered sports and social diversions alongside the mountain scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, sold views of such resorts as travel souvenirs, so the picture doubles as a record of how well-to-do vacationers spent their days.
