Tennis players take to the court at Manhanset House, a resort hotel on Shelter Island, New York, where games on the grounds were a common pastime for summer guests. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document scenic and fashionable destinations, and its views were widely used to promote travel. This large 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative captures the leisure life of an early twentieth-century island resort, when visitors from the city came for sea air and organized recreation. The record gives the date only as a question mark, so the year should be read as an estimate.
